Merit Solutions and Record Retrieve

BACKGROUND

Merit Solutions is a specialist human resources firm that provides expert recruitment and selection support services based in Brisbane. Merit Solutions professional and diversely qualified HR and management consultants provide services that assist job applicants, managers, executive recruitment and HR teams across public, private and not-for-profit sectors. Merit Solutions clients include the Australian Government, Queensland Government, Brisbane City Council, Australian Tax Office, Ergon Energy, Utility Water and Translink.

In July 2013, Merit Solutions engaged Record Retrieve (at the time known as 1300 Record) for a one-off major project. Merit Solutions needed a flexible cloud-based platform to record and replay comments made by referees for recruitment candidates.

THE CHALLENGE

Merit Solutions was working on a large recruitment process with multiple stakeholders to manage. It was important that referee comments were captured accurately. The company wanted to find a call recording solution that could enable the interview panel to listen to referees comments in real time and not have to rely on a written report.

Alice-Anne Boylan, Senior Consultant, Merit Solutions explains, “We wanted the interview panel to hear the comments exactly as they were spoken and judge their authenticity, accuracy and sincerity for themselves.”

The nature of this project required that Merit Solutions capture a great deal of technical information from referees. “The ability to record and replay comments meant time saved on needing to capture detailed notes with the risk of reporting inaccuracies,” she says.

THE SOLUTION

There were members in the Merit Solutions team that had used call recording services in the past to assist with recruitment requirements. “I had used other recording programs before, but these had generally required a moderator to set up the call. Record Retrieve was ideal, I easily did all the set-up myself and it enabled me to record anywhere as well – I didn’t have to be sitting at my desk,” Alice-Anne enthuses.

Merit Solutions found Record Retrieve was simple to use and provided a very cost effective solution for their project needs. “We adored the flexibility of the software. Our licence arrangement meant that we could alternate users if one consultant was unable to ring a referee. The capacity to extend the licence to multiple simultaneous users was fantastic,” she says.

Alice-Anne reports she had no challenges using the service. “It worked smoothly every time. Best of all it was very quick so our referees were never kept waiting on hold while we set up the recording. Using my mobile phone, it was a simple matter of merging calls,” she reports.

THE FUTURE

The greatest value according to Alice-Anne was everyone being able to “listen to the referee’s vocal inflections and tone and gain a good clue as to whether they genuinely endorsed a candidate. It is impossible to capture a laugh or warm vocal tone in writing.”
